Google’s Interview Warm-up Tool—Yay or Nay?
Feeling nervous before appearing for a job interview? Not anymore! Like other games online, you can now practice being interviewed by a computer.
After LinkedIn’s automated interview feedback tool was launched in 2020, Google has developed a similar facility for their users. With advancements in Artificial Intelligence, it is now easier for job-seekers to attempt a mock interview before the real deal.
A part of the Grow With Google initiative, this interview warm-up tool helps familiarize candidates with the kind of questions they can expect. According to the company, it is “a judgment-free zone for anyone who wants a little practice interviewing.”
What Exactly is Google Interview Warm-up?
Google Interview Warmup is an AI-based platform to help individuals practise interviewing for a job. This tool asks different questions categorized into separate segments.
For example, it will question you about your background and ask skill-specific queries related to the job description. Additionally, it will put forward situational and critical thinking questions like “Tell me about a time when you had to step up in a leadership role.”
It is helpful for candidates seeking employment in various fields like digital marketing, data analytics, e-commerce, UX design, IT support, etc. Based on the field chosen, it also selects identifiable talking points related to skill and experience.
How to use the Google Interview Warm-up Tool?
Step 1: Getting started with an interview warm-up is simpler than you imagine. All you have to do is access the official tool website and click on the ‘Start Practicing’ button.
Step 2: Now, you will see a window with various employment fields listed. Select the one you want to practice interviewing for.
Step 3: Moving further, you will see a card mentioning 5 randomly selected questions. To begin the test, click on the ‘Start’ button.
Step 4: As soon as the test starts, you will be able to see a question pop up on your screen. You can answer either by speaking in the microphone or typing. Here, you will find different types of questions like background or situational.
Step 5: Once the test has ended, you will be allowed to review your answers. You will also get an option to highlight job-related terms and most-used words to refine your speech further.
Note: Google does not present a result or grades. Here, you must go through the suggested points and insights to improve your answers.
AI’s Role in Recruitment
Interviews can be nerve wracking—both for the candidates and the HR managers. No one wants to sit through an hour-long interview with someone who never bothered to read the job description.
AI has now made the recruitment procedure more streamlined and is already used by multiple companies. For example, Infosys has a Reskill and Restart program to help list individuals based on their interests and skill set.
Not a Replacement for a Face-to-Face Conversation
Hearing experts share their reviews on the Google warm-up tool; it can be concluded that AI is not a replacement for another human.
In the words of Mia Williams, a job interview coach, “A tool couldn’t tell you how confident you sound in what you are saying. A tool couldn’t tell you the level of enthusiasm you have when you speak.”
Needless to say, the connection you share with the other person during the interview matters just as much. If you are saying all the right things without sounding confident or maintaining eye contact, you are not bound to succeed!
